    Hegseth says four U.S. troops died when an Iranian munition hit a Kuwait operations center

    At the war's first Pentagon briefing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the four U.S. dead were killed when a munition got past air defenses and hit a fortified tactical operations center in Kuwait, and said Iran had been "stalling" in talks. Gen. Dan Caine said the U.S. had local air superiority over Iran but its objectives would "take some time" and more Americans could die.

    Kuwaiti air defenses mistakenly shoot down three U.S. F-15E jets; all six crew survive

    Central Command said three F-15E Strike Eagles flying in support of Operation Epic Fury went down over Kuwait in an apparent friendly-fire incident during attacks by Iranian aircraft, missiles and drones. All six aircrew ejected and were recovered in stable condition; Kuwait acknowledged the incident, while Iranian state TV claimed Iran had targeted one of the planes.

    Britain's Defense Ministry said a suspected drone struck RAF Akrotiri, its main air base for Middle East operations, at midnight local time, with no casualties; Cyprus' president said a Shahed drone caused minor damage and two more drones were intercepted later Monday. A Cypriot government source told AFP the drones were launched from Lebanon, "most likely" by Hezbollah.

    U.S. and Israel launch joint strikes on Iran, opening the war

    U.S. and Israeli forces began striking Iran on Saturday morning, with explosions across Tehran and some of the first hits near Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's offices; Revolutionary Guard command sites, air defenses, missile and drone launch sites and airfields were among the targets. Israel's defense minister called it a preemptive strike, declared a nationwide state of emergency and Israel closed its airspace.
