MarineTraffic and Kpler counted 95 crossings of the Strait of Hormuz in the week to Aug. 16, down 19.5 percent, falling from 19 on Aug. 11 to three on Aug. 16; 51 used Iran's designated route and 44 other routes. Kpler counted five commodity vessels on Saturday and none on Sunday, against 31 the previous weekend, while Bab el-Mandeb transits rose to 254 from 238.
Brent crude settled at $88.52 a barrel on Friday, up $1.45, and WTI at $82.40, up $1.15, leaving the benchmarks about 6 percent and 5.4 percent higher on the week after new attacks on tankers and no progress toward a peace deal.
UKMTO said an unknown projectile hit the hull of a bulk carrier in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday; the crew were reported safe, with no damage assessment and the environmental impact unknown. UKMTO said it had received 56 reports of damage to vessels in and near the strait since the war began on Feb. 28.
Kpler counted two vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, a grain ship entering Iranian waters and an empty bulk carrier leaving, with no crude shipments visible, after nine on Thursday against an August average of 12 and more than 130 a day before the war. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Navy could keep up the blockade of Iranian ports 'indefinitely.'
ADNOC said two of its vessels were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday evening, Aug. 13, with no injuries, and the UAE foreign ministry blamed a 'hostile Iranian attack,' calling it 'piracy' by the IRGC; UKMTO reported two drone strikes on outbound tankers with minor damage. On Friday evening ADNOC said a third vessel was attacked, which the UAE also blamed on Iran.
The International Energy Agency cut its 2026 forecast to a fall in global oil demand of 1.6 million barrels a day, from 1 million a month earlier, saying 'the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz and elevated fuel prices continue to weigh on oil consumption.' It put July supply at 101.5 million barrels a day, still 6.3 million below pre-war levels.
CENTCOM said a Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the engine room of the Panama-flagged container ship Vela Nova, disabling its steering, after its crew ignored repeated warnings while trying to cross the Gulf of Oman toward Iran. CENTCOM said the blockade had redirected 55 vessels, disabled three and boarded two since July.
Yemen's government said three Houthi ballistic missiles hit the small food-carrying cargo ship Tihamah near Bab el-Mandeb, killing four crew, three Pakistanis and one Indonesian, and that a second strike hit rescuers, killing two of them. Trump extended for 90 days, from Aug. 17, the Jones Act waiver he first issued on March 17, letting foreign-flagged ships carry oil, fuels, fertilizer and related cargo between U.S. ports. Unlike earlier extensions it covers only energy and agricultural cargo, and the Pentagon will consult the Maritime Administration on which voyages qualify.

ADNOC said 15 of its vessels have been attacked since the war began, three of them that week, with one crew member killed and 20 injured.

Bloomberg, citing security firms and ship tracking, identified it as the LNG carrier GasLog Shanghai, loaded with Qatari cargo; the next day UKMTO reported a large splash and explosion near another tanker northwest of Khasab.

Kuwait's electricity ministry said a fire broke out at a power and water desalination plant after a new round of Iranian attacks, forcing it to disconnect generating units, a day after another plant was damaged. Kuwait Petroleum Corporation said a vital oil site was hit, injuring several people, and Kuwait Airways suspended flights at Kuwait International Airport.

CENTCOM said a U.S. aircraft fired Hellfire missiles into the smokestack of the unladen, Curacao-flagged tanker Belma after it ignored warnings while sailing toward Kharg Island. An Iranian official said the tanker was hit again by two U.S. missiles two days later, and U.S. Marines released video of boarding a tanker in the Gulf of Oman.
