UN shipping agency document says countries must reject Iran's bid to control Hormuz

A document from the International Maritime Organization said countries must reject Iranian efforts to control the Strait of Hormuz, The Times of Israel reported. The UAE and allied states had submitted a joint proposal on Hormuz to the IMO Council's 187th session, which Iran had called politically motivated and urged the council not to adopt.

Why it matters

Iran's strait authority was requiring ships to obtain its permits and planned fees after the 60-day talks; on July 13 the IMO said there is 'no legal basis' for mandatory tolls to transit an international strait.
