Brent crude briefly rose above $100 a barrel on Thursday before easing to $99.48 at 9:30 a.m. ET, and WTI reached $90.74, up 4.5 percent, according to FactSet data cited by CBS News. The U.S. average gasoline price hit $4.09 a gallon, up from $3.94 a week earlier.
Why it matters
The spike followed the first Houthi attack on Saudi crude on the Red Sea route that had been the main bypass around Hormuz; Iran's parliament speaker mocked the U.S. strategy for producing 'triple-digit oil.'
