The Lebanese army said units began deploying on Tuesday morning to Zawtar al-Gharbiya in the Nabatieh region after Israeli forces withdrew, one of three 'pilot zone' villages with Froun and Srifa where the State Department said on Monday operations had begun under the U.S.-brokered Israel-Lebanon framework. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam visited Zawtar the next day and said Beirut seeks a complete Israeli withdrawal from the south.
Why it matters
It is the first test of the June framework's trade of Israeli withdrawal for Lebanese army control and Hezbollah disarmament; on the first day Lebanon accused Israeli troops of firing near its soldiers, and Israel said it fired only warning shots.
