A senior U.S. official said Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a ceasefire from 4 p.m. local time, worked out by U.S. and Qatari negotiators with help from Iran, and a senior Israeli official confirmed it. Lebanon's health ministry said Israeli strikes since midnight had killed 47 people in the south and the Bekaa, after four Israeli soldiers were killed in fighting in south Lebanon.

Why it matters

The flare-up had already forced the cancellation of the first U.S.-Iran implementation talks in Switzerland, and Israeli strikes resumed within hours of the truce.
