Israeli forces led by the Golani Brigade captured the Beaufort ridge and its Crusader-era castle near Nabatieh, about 15 km from the border, after crossing the Litani River in an operation the military said had begun days earlier under a news blackout; Defence Minister Israel Katz said troops would stay there as part of Israel's security zone. Israel last held the castle from 1982 until its withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.

Why it matters
